Good Afternoon NTHS Families 

February is a short month, but there are many events happening within the building and community. This upcoming week will be a short one due to Teachers' Convention (Thursday and Friday) and Family Day (Monday). This is just a reminder that there will be no school on those days. The next Nighthawk News will be sent out on Friday, February 21. Here are some dates of significance:

Weekend Results 

North Trail had a successful wrestling tournament at Rundle College last weekend. The event was split into Rookies and Open Class. For the Rookies, Matthew A. placed 2nd, Mannix C. placed 3rd, Sam C. placed 2nd, Logan M. placed 3rd, Samantha O. placed 1st, and Rezwan W. placed 2nd in their respective weight classes.  Congrats to Samantha who won the Outstanding Female Rookie Athlete of the tournament. 

For the Open Class, Kiara C. placed 2nd, Kaden deC. placed 3rd, Kamso D. placed 3rd, Tyssen H. placed 1st, and Chelsea L. placed 1st in their respective weight classes. Congrats to Tyssen who won the Outstanding Male Open Class Athlete of the tournament.  

Robotics 

NTHS Teams took home high ranking awards in a field of 33 teams. The senior team placed 2nd overall in robot rankings and 3rd overall in team rankings.

  • Inspire Award 3rd Place 

The Rookie team placed 4th overall in robot rankings and 2nd overall in team rankings.

  • Inspire Award 2nd Place (thank you Mock Judges for the preparation  - Cathy and Carly) 

Both our seniors and our rookies qualified for Provincials March 15 and 16 in Red Deer. 

Cafeteria Re-Opening  

The cafeteria will re-open on Tuesday and Wednesday this week for lunch service only. After the Family Day weekend, there will be full service. Please see the menu for the month of February on the Cafeteria/Menu page.

Lost and Found 

Our lost and found is overflowing with hoodies, sweat pants, and other items. We encourage students to take a moment to check lost and found this week for any items they may be missing. After the Family Day weekend, we will be bagging up the items and donating them to a charity. 

Language Based Travel Opportunities 

Learning an additional language can give you wings…to other provinces, to other countries, and lead you to unlimited advantages in life! Here is an overview of language-based travel opportunities available to North Trail students:

1. Alberta Education/Alberta Government International Student Exchanges 

  • 10 week reciprocal exchange to Spain, Spanish 20 required before or during exchange
  • 8 week reciprocal exchange to Mexico, Spanish 20 required before or during exchange
  • 12 week reciprocal exchange to Quebec, French 20 required before or during exchange   
  • 8 week reciprocal exchange to France, French 20 required before or during exchange  

For all of the above, students must submit applications to the school Liaison Teacher, Ms. Dunsmoor, by February 27 at the latest. Details and application forms are available online: Student Exchange Programs

2. YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange in Quebec

  • The YMCA Summer Work Student Exchange (SWSE) is a 6-week program that offers youth ages 16-17 the opportunity to gain paid work experience, practise their second official language skills, and discover another community within Canada.

3. Explore Program offered by Canada’s Official Languages Programs

  • Explore is an intensive, government-funded immersion program offered during the spring and summer in exciting locations across Canada. The sessions are taught at accredited institutions, and students live on campus or with local host families.

Traffic Safety Reminder 

Students, please remember to cross at the intersection and obey traffic signals. We have had a number of complaints from the community as sometimes students continue to cross when cars have the green light.
